I hear this often: “You go ahead and quit, I’ll keep fighting for liberty (in the GOP)!” For several reasons this comment/diatribe incense’s me and dismay’s me…. I will expand on these reasons in this post.
First let’s look at the word liberty. We see descriptions such as “the state of being free, power to do as one pleases.” Well how is it truly liberty you are advocating when your definition and interpretation of the meaning of the word, is the only one that is accepted among yourself and those like you. Freedom to disagree and intellectual diversity actually challenge one’s views, and shore up weaknesses to make them irrefutable. To avoid this public service to fight for your cause, is a grave error that is incomprehensible. Particularly if you are trying to convince novices to your underlying cause.
“Freedom from physical restraint,” well that seems to make sense. However if you DO work within the system to reform it from the bottom up, you will certainly be interrupted and physically restrained, even violently, by the powers that control the particular apparatus that you are attempting to use as a vehicle for your own cause. Just see the latest GOP delegate controversy for that in real life.
“Freedom from arbitrary or despotic control”. Isn’t the opposite of this the very definition or actual effect OF our modern political order and system of governance? If your voice is not heard at the ballot box, or when you bother to petition your government for redress of grievances, and you are summarily deprived of inalienable natural human rights, that this same institution you entrust this sacred duty, is hell-bent determined on violating, for their own aims and interests, then isn’t that by definition the hallmark of “arbitrary and despotic control?” If you are subject to the same laws they exempt themselves from and give out immunity towards those who serve their ends and aims, then how is appealing TO this broken system, or even better, crusading to become a part OF that system, emblematic of the very definition of the word, liberty itself!
“…the positive enjoyment of various social, political, or economic rights and privileges.” The argument of rights vs. privileges would be best served for another day. But one can certainly come to the conclusion that our inalienable rights are being summarily eliminated, and the list of temporary privileges (subject to behavior) is getting longer and longer by the day. The Health Care Bill, is just the latest example of this.
This inhibits, the next tenet of liberty, namely “the power of choice.” You have less and less choice and say about events in your daily life and how to carry out your personal liberties, individually or even collectively. Day by day, the freedom of personal choice is being choked out of the American experience. What food you eat, what information you get to learn, what you can do to make a living and provide a service to the community or even organize to meet your own needs, these are all under assault from our current form of government. You are only free and encouraged to be a consumer, and have the corporations or industrial complexes of our day, dictate to you what you can and cannot do, through “your” (s)elected “representatives.”
“a right or immunity (by)… grant or privilege….”– Here we go again!
“permission to go, within limits”– Oy!
“action going beyond limits, breach of etiquette, a risk, a chance” –Yes, going outside your boundaries is the only way to transcend beyond them, to mark new ground and lay the framework for new ideas, visions and ideals, for what is possible.
“a violation of rules or a deviation from standard practice” –Sometimes liberty DOES involve breaking the rules of the established order, not appealing to them, or wishing to become one of them…

a distortion of fact” –Well, you would certainly have to distort more than a few facts to maintain the relevance and immunity of the established order for the consequences of their actions, and in-actions.

a short authorized absence from naval duty usually for less than 48 hours”
At its core, what is “liberty?” It is basically honoring the principle of autonomy, which is basically the principle of self-governing, self directing that implies personal freedom.
Now does fighting for the establishment, the preservation of that establishment, with new faces and new takes on old ideologies have anything to do with honoring that sacred principle? Are you fighting for the right to disagree with the establishment or the “new order” that aspires to become it? Are you allowed to question or to participate with YOUR views, contributions and ideals? If not, then brother that aint liberty you are fighting for…
Okay, now let’s take a look at “freedom.”
Freedom can be described as “the state of being free,” meaning “the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action.” Okay can you honestly say that you are fighting for the absence of coercion or constraint in choice or action, politically? Are there certain things one is NOT permitted to talk about, advocate or even associate amongst others who do so, let alone be free to slander, submit untruths, and vile, unproven assertions about, just because they dare to be “off message” and you selfishly perceive that as a threat to your cause, or crusade, putting your ideas and ideals on a pedestal, by censoring or defaming those who dare to disagree with you, and those like you? Well, that is Anti-freedom!
“liberation from slavery or restraint or from the power of another : independence.” Are you free from the power of another? Or wholly dependent on it, for your definition of absolute truth? Do you critique positions or accept them without question, and question only those who challenge or offer alternate views and perspectives from those you entrust to form your own. Is that the principle of independence, or dependence, or even worse, the phenomenon of “perfect independence, contending for dependence” that Thomas Paine tried to warn us about in his seminal work “Common Sense?” Do you appeal or even HAVE your own sense of right and wrong, and morality and ideal of what constitutes basic humanity and can be considered “humane?” Or do you look outside of yourself and others, only to those with a vested interest and self-interest, in the outcome, to define that FOR you?
“the quality or state of being exempt or released usually from something onerous.” Are you really exempt from the consequences of government, or subject TO them? When government creates odious laws and regulations and enforces unlawful edicts, on the basis of subjective, “color or law” extrajudicial and anti-democratic justifications, are YOU the one that benefits? Did you benefit from the bailout of Wall St. and the Labor Unions, and the Oil Companies, and the car companies? Were you exempt from having your children fight and die in conflicts, and as a result of actions taken against sovereign governments and people’s in direct violation of Constitutional, International law, and the fundamental, basic human rights of all of humanity? Do YOU get tax exemptions and enjoy loopholes from unconstitutional and therefore, unlawful legislation? You pay the Income Tax. The Obama Administration Cabinet members are exempt. You are to pay the Carbon Tax, other nations are exempt, even world leading polluters like China! You are subjected to regulations that stifle businesses from expanding or hiring new workers, while they are given incentives to create jobs outside the country and take our infrastructure and resources overseas to benefit other nations, against our will and without our consent. But with the consent of Congress and the Multinational corporations and interest groups that harbor them.
Are YOU exempt from “austerity” measures? Hell NO! Does Congress similarly get their benefits cut? NO! In fact, they get to vote themselves a pay raise, with a guaranteed rolling cost of living adjustment, to exempt them from the tax of inflation that comes directly from Congress asking multinational banks to print money, and borrow credit, in YOUR NAME, for THEIR aims! You have NO say! You don’t even have a right of oversight! And to know what these institutions did with the money your Government gave them, and continues to do so! No audit, no restraint, endless vaults of free money, out of the US, for multinational corporations and organizations to use to in fact, leave America, behind!
Were you exempt from the government’s aims to collect and use data, private, intimate data, against you, and interfere with your liberty to have a job, or engage in political action, or start a business, or petition the government for redress of grievances? Hell NO! But the government and their agents were exempt from any and all criminal penalties of their illegal, and unlawful activities. Some even got promoted! And a pay raise!
“the quality of being frank, open, or outspoken…. unrestricted use…. a political right…”–Well, government is more interested in autonomy for them, freedom without accountability, unrestricted use (of your resources) and actively is targeting those who are “frank, outspoken, (about asserting their) political right!” As we have just seen with the most recent example in what is still commonly referred to as, America.
But then there is that damn word “privilege” again! In fact, if your counting, 2 for 2, so far!??
Okay, how about “Tyranny?” Let’s see just what we are trying to prevent, and avoid by propping up, this current “system” we have now….
…”oppressive power”… specifically  “oppressive power exerted by government.” –Well, I’ll be… We are supposed to be wary, suspicious and even critical OF our government, and ironically supportive OF those who criticize government! This certainly is a kick in the head, wouldn’t you say?!!
…”a government in which absolute power is vested in a single ruler”… Well W. called himself “the decider,”  and Obama certainly likes to act independent of the will of the American people and of even Congress and International law, as well as state law, with his forays overseas, and threats of enforcement actions against sovereign states of America, and those who dare to disagree with him. Even if they agree on principle and disagree on approach or implementation of such.
Can you even remember the last time Congress defeated something the President wanted or even asked for? I can’t. How many bills now pass unanimously and by unrecorded “voice vote,” or in “secret session,”  or policy inserted into already agreed to bills, which are then passed, only later to find out, new legislation is to be enacted, that is wholly unrelated to the issue in question. Just look at ANY budget bill or Appropriations Bill in recent memory, for the most egregious examples of this travesty of justice, perversion of law, and usurpation of the duties and purpose of lawmaking in our nation.
“the office, authority, and administration of a tyrant.” (tyrant–an absolute ruler unrestrained by law or constitution, a usurper of sovereignty, : a ruler who exercises absolute power oppressively or brutally,

one resembling an oppressive ruler in the harsh use of authority or power) Anybody with the Common Sense of a Thomas Paine, can NOT deny, that this IS the current and present state of America today…
“a rigorous condition imposed by some outside agency or force.” –Like the government, perhaps?
“an oppressive, harsh, or unjust act : a tyrannical act” –Oh, just about every act of government, these days?
Question: How does appealing to such an individual, or vast collection of them, do anything to remedy this dire circumstance?
Which brings us to: Denial!
refusal to satisfy a request or desire –Like to demand a respect and enforcement and preservation of natural, enshrined human rights, over temporary privileges subject to arbitrary definitions of behavior.
: refusal to admit the truth or reality (as of a statement or charge) — See previous note. : assertion that an allegation is false — Especially absent evidence or an effort to present any…

b : refusal to acknowledge a person or a thing : disavowal — Like anybody who counters this symptom of most faith-based ideologies in absence and offense to reason.

3
: the opposing by the defendant of an allegation of the opposite party in a lawsuit — I don’t think appealing to the Federal Supreme Court to repeal Federal laws, or to the lawmakers themselves to repeal theirs, and in effect rebuke themselves, is much of a coherent strategy or viable solution. Naturally most Congressmen ARE lawyers, skilled at manipulating the laws and interpretation of such to suit their own personal interests, and interested parties.
4
: self-denial
5
: negation in logic — The indictment of this system, and the one fundamental way it CAN be defeated in our lifetime! If we just relied and depended on reason and logic to address conditions in our lives and improve them, could things not actually IMPROVE!!! Sounds insane, doesn’t it! Most things that are sane, are seen as insane, these days, if you haven’t noticed….
6
: a psychological defense mechanism in which confrontation with a personal problem or with reality is avoided by denying the existence of the problem or reality

in denial: refusing to admit the truth or reality of something unpleasant — Is this NOT in any way representative of where we are as a nation these days?

Are we so threatened by change in our deteriorating condition that change itself is seen as a threat that must be prevented at all costs? And who does this approach ultimately benefit? You and your fellow-man, or those who appointed themselves leaders of all man? Who is insulated from the consequences of their own actions? And depends on those who entrusted them with their status, to continue to insulate them by their obedience to unquestioned, inaction.
Are we a nation of sovereigns and free men, with a government that serves our aims, and to protect our rights, to enjoy autonomy in all things, as long as we do not engage in force, fraud or abuse of our fellow-man? Or have we given that perfect union away, for the vile, precariousness of “perfect independence, contending for dependence,”  that our self-appointed masters of the universe ingrain, enforce and institute among us, the American people, so  that the only institutions that are permitted to exist, are those who serve their aims, and serve to aim all those opposed or in disagreement, by way of appeal to reason and justice,  to the self-contained facilities that they erected to house such threats to their freedoms, and life of unrestrained privilege, while sending those who would otherwise join them in their cause, the bill for their indefinite internment and alienation from society, as a whole.
Does being content to continue these practices that undermine and eviscerates basic, human rights, while calling such practices within the best interests of those adversely affected, comparable to the definition of any word in the human language?
Perhaps this one:

“: a deranged state of the mind usually occurring as a specific disorder (as schizophrenia)
: such unsoundness of mind or lack of understanding as prevents one from having the mental capacity required by law to enter into a particular relationship, status, or transaction or as removes one from criminal or civil responsibility
: extreme folly or unreasonableness

: something utterly foolish or unreasonable”

You have just read, the very definition of insanity…
Is it fair to consider the paradox of endlessly appealing to those who created the problem to solve it, while realizing that their only power comes and expands from the exacerbation OF problems, rather than solving them, as insanity?
Is this fundamental offense and aberration to the presence and appeal of reason and utilization of logic to solve problems, which inevitably results in the continuation and escalation of precarious circumstances that enable the reliance  on faith in absence of reason, to save one from the circumstances of their own hubris, and penalize others for such, anything other than insane and an example of insanity?
Forget how noble or well intended such appeals, and motivations of those who use such appeals to justify their actions and relative in-actions, as remember “the road to hell is paved with good intentions…” Not heaven, and certainly no presentation of any ideal heaven on Earth.
When it all comes down to it, is our greatest enemy, ourselves? And our folly to continue to depend on denial of fundamental definitions and facts behind the meaning and basis of human words, to allow us to allow others to use the manipulation of those words to give them power they did not have, at our expense; and autonomy they did not earn, to shield themselves from the consequences of their own actions?
Well if that is the case, yes, is IS our fault, and will continue to be so. Yes, they are guilty for willfully neglecting their duty and undermining our authority by omitting it, and substituting their own, out of thin air. But as long as we depend on these broken individuals who encompass this broken system to provide us with the unending yield of diminishing returns, the evisceration of inalienable rights into subjective privileges subject to behavior and rule by unchecked absolute power and authority, we will be sentenced to our own destruction as a nation first, then as a people, second. Since like the founders warned us, a nation is only as strong as its people.
Now we are no longer strong. We are subjects to absolute rule, and rulers, with no inherent or unalienable rights, and no legacy to pass on to our children to ensure prosperity, to give them hope for a future, us hope for peace and security, and to the mechanism our Founding Fathers to make us the exception that preserved the people at the expense of their rulers, and allowed it to be turned unto itself, to become the mechanism for enslaving humanity, instead of liberating it, under the banner of autonomy, rather than arbitrary injustice.
That is the legacy we have, and will leave for our children.
Do we have the courage to change? To advocate for reform of corrupt systems that do not serve us, and eradication of any that refuse to, outright? If not, there can be no hope. Not for anyone. Just the silent despair of obedience to injustice, and the horrific premonition of when our turn to be a victim of this monster we enabled, to come and chew us up, and spit us out, to rot and die, when it has had it’s “rightful” fill and “use” of us, the aptly named “Human Resources” of this land…
If that is the future we leave for those who are left, the only “justice” that will be left for us, will be the multitude of  “just us” to share our last fleeting moments of freedom with, until it is our turn to be discarded, by the system we propped up, and enabled. Time and time, again.  Many things may and well be said at that time. But among all the many words and phrases… “Guilty” will be most apparent and appropriate of all… words… to do justice… to those who chose to be just, for only those who are  in-just. To even their own detriment…
